Pause for a moment and picture your first car. Sure, you remember the make and the model, the quirky rattles and knocks, and the gas pump prices that were shockingly low by today's standards. But the real rush comes in recalling your automobile adventures. Who can forget taking that first cruise down the coast behind the wheel of your own convertible? How many times did your high school friends pile in the backseat for a trip to the movies, the mall or a rival high school football game? What were you driving when you went on that first date, got your first job, took that terrific family road trip or dropped your teenager off for the first semester of college?
With cars so often linked to life's biggest moments, its no wonder that we find ourselves enchanted by that certain sweep of chrome on a favorite marque. Vehicles are more than just a way to get from here to there-and for car collectors, race car drivers and classic auto enthusiasts, wheels take on a special significance. To these people, the automobile is an investment, a showpiece, even a personal statement. It's a part of one's history, and it's a treasure made to enjoy and to share. Every August, auto devotees roll into the region for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and related Classic Car Week events. In honor of the festivities, the area's most passionate car people have pushed up their garage doors to give us peek at their prized possessions.
