Grape Escape!

The dramatic backdrop of land meeting sea is what attracts droves of tourists to Monterey County each year. It is also what makes Monterey a world-class wine region. Take the Ball On The Rise

If You Want to succeed at a higher level, you have to go after the ball and stop letting it come to you. Hitting on the rise can be a daunting task, but it won't be long before you realize it's worth the effort. You need to swing at the peak of the ball's bounce or at your ideal contact point if the ball is going to bounce high, rather than waiting for it to fall into your hitting zone after it's reached its full height. In order to do that, keep these four elements in mind:

Get to the ball quickly

Turn your shoulders

Use a short backswing; and

Make sure your weight is moving forward at contact

Don't wait for the ball that bounces well inside the baseline. Go get it!

According to researchers in the Fatherhood Project at the Families & Work Institute, interacting with dad is crucial for child development. Spending time with your infant or toddler will influence how they relate to other people later in their lives, and how they view the world at large. Dads often tell family stories to children, giving them an anchor to their family history as they grow and experience life's challenges for themselves.

Is cross-country street racing going legit? Team Polizei, which has won the completely illegal New York to Los Angeles Gumball Rally and holds the unofficial cross-cross-country speed record (just over 31 hours), has signed on with Grand-Am Series team TRG, aka The Racer's Group, to drive a 2008 Porsche GT3 in the Grand-Am event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca near Monterey, Calif., next month. Henri Richard and Rene' Villeneuve will take the wheel for Polizei, which is the German word for police.

Roll out the red carpet. The 80th anniversary of the first Academy Awards ceremony is May 16. However, the most prestigious film award show wasn't always about glitz and glamour. In 1929, only 250 people attended the first banquet, with a presentation ceremony that lasted only five minutes. And no suspense was involved-the winners had been announced three months prior.

Here are some additional Oscar fun facts: Leader of the pack, The first award ever presented went to Emil Jannings in 1929 for his roles in " The Last Command" and " The Way of All Flesh."

The more, the merrier, Meryl Streep, Kathrine Hepburn and Jack Nickolson are the three actors with the most nominations.

The Oscar queen, Kathrine Hepburn holds the prominent record for the most awards won, taking home four golden statuettes in her lifetime.

Put health front and center with a new focus on citrus this Spring!

Forage for some of April's in-season fruits, such as: Grapefruit. Look for blemish-free skin and heavy for its size. Store in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Lemons. Choose heavy fruits with firm skins. Store in the fridge for up to three weeks.

Tangerines. Don't choose by color because the rind can be dyed. Select heavy fruit and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Fitness Tip for April

When our mind sleeps, so do our muscles. To help redistribute blood through your muscles in the morning, perform three to four minutes of easy exercises or stretching when you get up. Start by stretching for three seconds and relaxing for two seconds. Repeat five times. You'll increase muscle range, forcefulness and speed of motion.

The following includes a few safety tips that can protect children who plan to go trick-or-treating.

Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source. To minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists.

Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street.

But the real rush comes in recalling your automobile adventures. Who can forget taking that first cruise down the coast behind the wheel of your own convertible? How many times did your high school friends pile in the backseat for a trip to the movies, the mall or a rival high school football game? What were you driving when you went on that first date, got your first job, took that terrific family road trip or dropped your teenager off for the first semester of college?

With cars so often linked to life's biggest moments, its no wonder that we find ourselves enchanted by that certain sweep of chrome on a favorite marque. Vehicles are more than just a way to get from here to there-and for car collectors, race car drivers and classic auto enthusiasts, wheels take on a special significance. To these people, the automobile is an investment, a showpiece, even a personal statement. It's a part of one's history, and it's a treasure made to enjoy and to share. New Cellular Phone Laws that Go Into Effect July 1, 2008

The first prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle, ( Vehicle Code 23123 ). The second is that motorists 18 and over may use a " hands-free device. " Drivers under the age of 18 may NOT use a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle, ( Vehicle Code 23124 ).
